Limousin Exchange Includes Bull Listing Service, Females for Sale, Feeder Calf Classifieds
By Bo Sexson, co-director of member and commercial relations, North American Limousin Foundation

As a producer of Limousin and Lim‑Flex® seedstock, do you have a “free cowboy” – one who is not on the payroll – selling bulls and females for you? Is he managing your herd inventory and keeping your animals’ genetic information up-to-date? If not, list your bulls and females on the Limousin Exchange Bull Listing Service and Females for Sale, respectively, which are enjoying remarkable success. The services allow North American Limousin Foundation (NALF) members to list their bulls and females for sale in searchable databases on the NALF Web site (www.nalf.org). Both private-treaty and public-auction sale offerings are included.

As a commercial cattle producer looking for Limousin and Lim‑Flex bulls and females, would it not be a lot easier for you to be able to search for animals in a designated area before a sale or herd visit? If you think so, look to the Limousin Exchange.

Potential customers wanting to incorporate registered Limousin and Lim‑Flex seedstock – “the best cross on Angus” – into their herds can search for prospects by directing their browsers to the NALF Web site and clicking one of the Limousin Exchange links. They then can designate a variety of criteria to identify the cattle that fit their needs.

The bull and female listings include their names, registration numbers, tattoos, birthdates, pedigrees, expected progeny differences (EPDs), coat colors, polled statuses, ultrasound-scan data, owner contact information and additional comments. Potential customers can sort those results by any trait.

Listing registered seedstock for sale is extremely easy to do. Let the “free cowboy” do the dirty work of selling bulls and females for you and list them on the Limousin Exchange. Breeders can add animals to the Limousin Exchange using the members-only, secure portion of the NALF Web site. Once logged in, click the “List Bulls for Sale” or “List Females for Sale” link, identify the animals you want to list from your registered inventory, select whether you are selling them at auction or by private-treaty, fill in the sale date and asking price (optional), comments and expiration date (optional), then click “submit.” The bull and female listing services are virtually free because NALF credits the $5 listing fees toward the animals’ eventual transfers.

To be competitive as a seedstock producer, your No. 1 priority should be your customers. Encourage them to list their calves in the Limousin Exchange Feeder Calf Classifieds, too. NALF always is in touch with feedyards and order buyers looking to source Limousin and Lim‑Flex feeder cattle. The Feeder Calf Classifieds enable not only NALF staff members but also feeder-cattle buyers to find cattle all across the country. Since January 2007, there have been 5,131 head of feeder steers and 1,935 head of feeder heifers listed on the Limousin Exchange. It is one of NALF’s most valuable tools when it comes to finding Limousin-influenced feeder cattle for order buyers and feeders.

NALF staff members encourage you as a seedstock producer to list your bulls, females and your customers’ calves on the Limousin Exchange. If you have any questions or are in the business of buying or selling Limousin and Lim‑Flex cattle, contact Frank Padilla (frank@nalf.org) or me (bo@nalf.org) in the member and commercial relations department at the NALF office, (303) 220-1693.
