Hunt Limousin: Cattle Designed for the Commercial Cattleman

Published July 10, 2020

Hunt Limousin keeps busy between their 350 registered cows, a heifer development program, 2,500 acres of row crop and alfalfa land, and their kids’ activities. This doesn’t stop the Hunt family from continually making top end Limousin influenced seedstock. Since 1980, Hunt Limousin, has been all about great cattle genetics and great customer service. They want to make sure that each buyer leaves with the bulls or females that best fit their program.

This is the main reason that they choose to sell all of their bulls by private treaty. “We work hard to provide a slow-paced, relaxed atmosphere for our customers. We help guide them to the bull(s) that have the highest potential to help their operation be successful. Often times at auctions people go home with bulls that aren’t actually the bull that they needed,” Dan mentioned. Hunt Limousin takes that scenario out of the situation and gives the buyer the time and information needed to get them the correct bull for their operation. They study through 4 or 5 bulls at a time, and through a process of elimination end up with the right bulls at the end of the day. Charles & Nancy and Dan & Melinda (Jenna, Adeline and Houston) Hunt host a customer appreciation dinner in mid-February thanking all of their buyers. Most of their bull buyers come from Nebraska, Colorado and Kansas. The Hunt family takes pride in providing long lasting genetics for the commercial cattleman and seedstock producers all around the country and internationally.

Another aspect of customer service that Hunt Limousin offers is their calf buy-back program. Hunt Limousin will buy back calves with HUNT genetics from commercial producers and even give them a premium when all the calf crop has HUNT genetics. The calves are then fed out and data is collected. They know the importance of great genetics and want as much data as possible to accurately give their customers what they are paying for. The data from the calves is one portion of that, the other is participating in the Limousin Inventory Management System (LIMS). This allows them to collect honest and accurate data on every animal and can once again give more meaningful data back to the customer.

It isn’t just about the bulls for this family run operation. They develop their own replacement heifers and also have a commercial heifer development program. The Hunt’s usually keep back around 80-85 replacement heifers. Hunt Limousin won’t compromise when it comes to picking out lasting mothers for their herd or for their customers. The females are put through multiple tests in order to be granted a spot in the herd. The heifers selected are first picked for structure and docility, then they study EPDs and pedigree.  The udder score of the dam is looked at, as well as the history of the dam.

Hunt Limousin selects the top 150-200 commercial Lim-Flex females from the calf buy-back program. All of these females have HUNT genetics in them. These heifers are raised right alongside the registered heifers. They are developed on a low-energy, high-roughage diet, getting plenty of exercise on cornstalk fields, which helps them be able to adapt to most any environment around the country. These commercial F1 females make long-lasting, productive momma cows. These heifers are synchronized and AI’ed to a leading calving ease sire and run with multiple HUNT-raised Limousin and Lim-Flex cleanup bulls. These heifers are sold anytime through their development, with the majority of them selling in August after preg checking. As with everything else, the Hunt family is there entirely for the customer and can accommodate whatever breeding system the customer needs. It’s all about what best fits their customers programs.

It doesn’t matter what the management decision is for, Hunt Limousin always has the customer in mind. They breed and sell females that will work wherever you go with them and be a long-lasting productive female. The bulls are bred to go out and work, they won’t melt and they will sire calves that give you the return needed.

Growth, calving ease and docility are three traits that fuel the decisions for the cattle. The cattle are bred and raised to be a well-balanced and functional animal that will work for any kind of customer no matter where environment they are asked to live in. So point yourself in the direction of Oxford, Nebraska and go find out for yourself the power of what putting the customer first truly means.
